Homemade Snack Mix Recipe
When I was a kid, my mom used to make a homemade snack mix for us. I loved it when she pulled out the turkey roaster, because I knew I was in for a special treat! The house would smell so good; the mixture of spices blended and warming up together in the oven… I would anxiously wait for her to give me a sample when she would check on the mix!
This is a modified version of her recipe, but it’s just as delicious! It can be put in lunch boxes for a recess snack, served as the snack for soccer practice, or if you need me to suggest it: it goes really well with beer!
Ingredients:
– bag of pretzel sticks
– jar of peanuts
-jar of cashews
– Chex cereal
– Cheerios cereal
– 3/4 cup of butter
– 2 teaspoons seasoning salt
– 1 teaspoon garlic powder
– 1 teaspoon celery salt
– 1 teaspoon onion powder
– 2 teaspoons garlic salt
– 3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
Step One:
Melt the butter in the microwave. Depending on your microwave, it can take up to two minutes. Start in 30 second increments. While the butter is melting, mix all the spices.
Step Two:
Combine the spices with the butter and whisk until completely dissolved.
Step Three:
Pour the sauce over the cereal and nuts (in your roaster) and mix well.
Step Four:
Bake uncovered, at 225 degrees for one hour. Every ten minutes, mix thoroughly.
THAT’S IT! Can you believe how easy it is?!
If your family likes chocolate with their snack mix, add in a bag of M & M’s (or my favorite, Reese’s pieces) when your mix has cooled.
Enjoy!
You can store this snack mix in ziploc bags. I sometimes take it as a hostess gift for playdates, and I put it in a mason jar and tie some twine around the lid. It’s really pretty, and everyone begs me for the recipe!
Will you be making this recipe? Let me know in the comments!
That sounds delicious!!! Definitely going to try it!
Let me know how it turns out!!
I love these kinds of snacks! Problem is, I’d eat the whole thing!
My mom used a full cup of butter…most of the time when I make it, I only use half, and it’s still good! It’s actually pretty low fat for all the ingredients. Plus, cereal is fortified, so it’s actually HEALTHY 😉
I can’t wait to try this! I love those little pretzel snack mixes and now I can make them at home. Thanks for sharing.
It’s really easy! Let me know how it turns out!
I’m making this. Almost all ingredient are gluten free, I just need to sub the pretzels for gf ones and pick the gf Chex. I am using your recipe!!!!
I thought of you when I posted this!! Thanks to you, I know that chex makes gluten free products! Let me know how you like it!
Yum! My MIL makes something similar. It’s yummy with chocolate candies.
Yes, it’s amazing!! Just add the chocolate candies after it cools.
Ooooo this snack mix sounds pretty yummy!!! I wish I had some right now for a before bed snack since I am starvingggg to death lol
It’s awesome! Let me know if you make it!!
Interesting combination I’d never think to put together. I’m going to have to try it next time we have people over and let you know the response!
Let me know, good or bad! 🙂
I got to try this one. For long time I have been looking for a snack that could be prepared and stored well, is yummy and healthy. This one looks perfect.
You can also freeze it, and just warm it up in the oven! Should store for up to three months!!
I can’t make it until I get back in the summer, I can’t find all of the ingredients here! (found everything but the Chex Mix)
You’ll live on it, i promise!!
